Specialty field: Slate Repairs, Copper and Tin Roofing
Geographical area: Central Virginia and North Carolina

Describe what you do?

I repair slates with copper nails and bibs, (metal inserts) instead of roof cement or 8cc common framing nails. I also use copper nails to install slate roofs. Why install a 600 year roof with an 8-10 year nail? I see other companies doing that all the time. I also install tin the old fashioned way, along with copper and steel or aluminum roofing products.

How did you get started as a specialty roofer?

I had an affinity with the field and it grew on me, and I became a repairman with a company. That job gave me lots of insights into why various roof assemblies fail. I opened my own business in 1988 and I specialize in difficult jobs that are too small for most contractors.

What is your area of coverage?

I work all over central Virginia and North Carolina.

How would you describe yourself as a specialist?

I take care of roofing leaks and roof repairs. Small jobs are the specialty of Albert's Roofing, but I do larger jobs sometimes. Slate and copper roofs are my real area of expertise. But if you're looking for a cheap temporary solution for your leaky roof, please don't call me.

What kinds of fees do you charge?

My price is based on doing the job on your house as if it were mine. I price the project to do it right the first time, not the second. I use only the best materials and don't make compromises. Saving money with a lower price is very often more expensive than any other option.

How has your profession changed since you entered it over forty years ago?

Shoddy workmanship is the worst problem. Too many roofers are failing to create a roof that will last. Also, asphalt products are far interior to what they were 20 years ago. I've seen leaks in otherwise good looking roofs as little as four years old.

What advice would you give to someone looking to hire a roofer?

Property owners should do their due diligence. Check into your roofer and his references.
